Anato-Bee is a high school outreach initiative that promotes education in the anatomical sciences.

The Anato-Bee will test high school student’s knowledge in anatomy, embryology, histology, and diagnostic skills through a spelling-bee inspired format. Top placing students at each regional competition will be awarded scholarships to attend a summer program of their choice that focuses on the anatomical and/or clinical sciences.

Local Competitions

Anato-Bee will send local host coordinators the virtual exam information via email on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Coordinators will communicate this information to their participants via Zoom. Participants will take a written exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQ’s) based on the learning objectives for anatomy, histology and embryology that are published on this website. Followed by a 50 MCQ image-based practical portion requiring identification of anatomical structures on cadaveric photographs and microscopic structures on histology photomicrographs. Participants will use a Zoom login and must have their microphone and computer camera turned on. The Anato-Bee Team will inform each local institution of their top student or students who will be invited to progress to the regional competition.

The top-placing students of each local competition will move on to their designated regional competition to be held in March 2025.

Regional Competitions

Winners of each local competition will advance to their respective regional competitions, which will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, and Sunday, March 9, 2025.

The regional competition will consist of:

  1. Anatomy Lab Practical: 50 multiple choice questions related to tagged structures on cadaveric donors, models and diagnostic images. All tagged structures will be selected from the published Lab Practical Structure Checklist.
  2. Standardized Patient Diagnoses: Written diagnoses of 10 volunteer “standardized patients” using illness scripts. A list of 40 possible patient illnesses will be included with the 11 possible questions allowed to be asked of the standardized patient.
  3. Written Exam: 125 multiple choice questions that allow participants to demonstrate mastery of the study guide objectives for anatomy, histology, and embryology.
  4. Clinical Applications for the Oral Quiz Round: 30 open-ended/single best answer questions related to the anatomical sciences. Questions will be asked verbally to all participants who have 60 seconds to respond via an electronic polling system on their personal devices. Participants are eliminated from this session after 3 incorrect responses are given and cannot accrue any additional points towards their competition total afterwards.
